These three photos show “before”, “during” and “after” pond construction for a landowner. The pond was designed for wildlife with shallow areas and gradual slopes.

This pond has attracted a large diversity of wildlife species including amphibians, insects, great blue herons, black bear, fox, coyotes, white tailed deer, moose and beaver! The photograph below shows a lodge and food cache made by a breeding pair of beaver in this pond. The remoteness of the pond and surrounding habitat, make this an ideal wildlife pond.

Pond Design and Layout

A well designed pond can be aesthetically pleasing, while adding diversity to the landscape. Ponds can also provide increased diversity for wildlife of all types, particularly aquatic species, from reptiles and amphibians to macro and micro invertebrates.  Pond dimensions and design vary considerably as no two sites are the same in topography, slope, plant species, and hydrology.
