Wildlife Inventory and
Habitat Recommendations

General Wildlife Habitat
Consideration: what most wildlife needs
1. Food
2. Water
3. Protective cover
4. Place to breed and raise young
5. Also for many wildlife species the proximity
to humans needs to be considered

FOOD
- Open areas - grasses, forbs, brambles, fruiting shrubs and berries
- Forested areas - mast, both hard and soft - oak, beech,highbush cranberry, apple,berries;
forage, both hardwood and softwood -beech,birch,maple,cedar,hemlock
- Edge Areas - pioneer and transitional species beneficial to both
game and non-game species
- Wetlands - ericaceaeous shrubs and
vegetation

WATER (seeps, wetlands, ponds, brooks, vernal pools)
- Important for many insects, amphibians and other invertebrates
- Water and food source for mammals, reptiles and birds
- Wetlands and riparian areas are utilized by over 90% of the region’s wildlife species and provide the preferred habitat
for over 40% of these species

COVER
- Softwood stands offer protection against harsh weather conditions
- Protection against harsh weather
conditions: reduce snow accumulations, crust formation, wind speeds
- Protection from predators: harder to be spotted
by predators
Here is what we can do for you to help
enhance or protect wildlife habitat on your land
- Inventory of wildlife throughout your property - before and/or
after treatment
- Provide recommendations for wildlife habitat improvement
- recommendations can be for specific species
- recommendations for increasing biodiversity to
maximize the number of wildlife species that will visit your property
- Wildlife habitat recommendations can be included in forest
management plans
